PH Levels dropping

Postby LissWiss » 27 Jan 2017, 12:33

Hi all, we recently purchased the Orbit 20. It's been running now for 7 weeks, and the PH level has (within the last week) dropped to 7.2. Would anyone be able to advise why this may have happened, and how best to increase the PH?

Thanks :help:

Low pH levels are generally caused by a build up of CO2 in the water. Depending on what you are feeding the jellies sometimes an oily skin can build up on the surface of the water which prevents gas exchange. A simple way to combat this is to open up the small red tap so that water drips onto the aquarium water's surface. If this still doesn't bring the pH back up to recommended levels (7.8-8.4) then you could try adding some pH buffer (available at most aquarium stores) or a small air stone to bubble air into the filtration chamber.

Let us know how you get on.

I recommend not adding any chemicals for this issue, and instead adding an air pump in a safe area, preferably out of the way in a filtration chamber. Although I can't claim to be as experienced as the author of your suggestion, I can tell you that I've tried a chemical solution to this, and it harmed more than helped. Additionally, it's not sustainable as is the solution I found for this problem. I too had this issue, and it's permanently solved, without further effort or maintenance required.

I wrote a blog post about it in affiliation with Sunset Marine Labs, which can be viewed here: ... -orbit-20/

I hope this helps you as much as it has others!
